Household pests are a common feature of Queensland life. Not all pests are destructive, but they’re still not something that you want in your home. That’s why we’ve put together some of our best ways to keep pests out of your home.

The term pest covers a range of creatures including cockroaches, ants, silverfish, termites etc. Not necessarily dangerous, but non the less annoying creatures that can seem to repeatedly come to your home no matter what. But there may be a reason why they keep returning to your home. For example, homes with children often end up with trails of crumbs around the house: this means pests will view your home as a food source and keep returning.

Here are a few ways that can help you to keep your home pest free.

  1. Don’t leave food about.
Pests will come to eat food or crumbs that you have left around, and keep returning because they’ll then see your home as a good food source. Keep surfaces clean of food and crumbs and they’ll son get the message that there’s nothing for them.
  2. Same goes for water/ drink spillages.
If pests start to see your home as a source of water then they will keep coming back. Ants especially will keep returning to a place that has provided them with water, so you need to send the message that your home is not a source of water by keeping surfaces clean and dry.
  3. Take extra care with damp rooms.
Rooms like bathrooms or laundry rooms make a very comfortable home for some pests. So make sure you tackle any signs of damp, and you regularly clean damp areas.
  4. Have a termite barrier.
Termites are a destructive pest, and the best way to stop them from infesting your home is to have a termite barrier in place. Termites will eat into any wood source, and can cause serious damage if they’re not monitored and dealt with. And once they’re in your home you can’t deter them away, you have to get the whole property treated. The more you can do to keep them away the better.
  5. Store seasonal items correctly.
If an item (or piece of clothing) is seasonal and you know it’s not going to be used for a while then it can become a home for pests, especially silverfish. Store items in plastic bags to keep them protected in the unused months. Seasonal clothing when not stored properly can become infested with silverfish. If you know you’re not going to be using something for a while don’t jut forget about it, store it.

Do these steps consistently and it should deter pests from coming to your home. If you do still have issues, or if you want a pest and termite inspection then get in touch and we can organise that.
